Mkomazi National Park is one of Tanzania's hidden gems. Nestled between the Pare and Usambara Mountains, it offers stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. It was a game reserve before becoming a national park in 2008 and now plays a vital role in protecting rare species such as the black rhino and the African wild dog.
On a day trip to Mkomazi, you can see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and various species of antelope. The park is also home to over 400 bird species, making it great for both safari lovers and bird watchers. A special highlight is the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary, where you have a high chance of seeing these endangered animals.
Unlike the busier parks in northern Tanzania, Mkomazi is quiet and not crowded. This provides a true safari experience. The park's open savannahs, baobab trees, and acacia woodlands create beautiful scenery for photos.
Mkomazi is only two hours from Moshi and three hours from Arusha. It is an excellent choice for travelers with limited time or those coming from a Kilimanjaro trek. You can enjoy game drives and birdwatching tours with skilled guides, ensuring a memorable experience in just one day.

Your day will start with an early pick-up from your hotel in Moshi (around 6:30–7:00 a.m.) or Arusha.
It takes approximately two hours to reach the park from Moshi and three to four hours from Arusha. You will receive a packed lunch and water for the day.
Upon arrival at the park, you will check in and immediately start your game drive. Your guide will drive you through various landscapes in search of wildlife.
You will stop at a designated picnic site in the park for a midday lunch amidst the wilderness.
After lunch, you'll continue with another game drive, allowing for more opportunities to spot different animals.
In the late afternoon, you'll depart from the park to begin the drive back to your hotel.
