Arusha National Park is a hidden gem located just a short drive from Arusha town, making it ideal for a light yet unforgettable safari experience. Although the park is relatively small, it boasts an incredible variety of landscapes, including lush tropical forests, open savannahs, shimmering lakes, and stunning views of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak.
What makes this park truly unique is the rare opportunity to enjoy a guided walking safari with an armed ranger. This is the only place in Northern Tanzania where such an experience is possible. You can step into the forest on foot and encounter giraffes, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, and colobus monkeys outside of a vehicle. Additionally, you can take a walk to waterfalls fed by the streams of Mount Meru.
After the walking tour, you will continue your exploration by jeep drive to Momella Lakes, famous for its flamingos and the possibility of seeing animals gathering along the shore to feed, and bird lovers will be delighted by the more than 400 recorded species, from African fish eagles to the colorful Narina trogon.
In a comfortable 4x4 vehicle with an opening roof, binoculars and other essentials, this day trip will give you a great mix of adventure, wildlife and scenery. Whether as a standalone trip or an add-on after a hike, Arusha National Park guarantees a day full of discovery.
After a 30-minute drive from Arusha or a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Moshi, you will arrive at Arusha National Park through the Ngongongare Gate. At this point, you will complete the registration process and obtain your entry permit, allowing you to begin your journey into the park.
This is a perfect opportunity to explore Arusha National Park. Start by visiting the area known as the Little Serengeti, then take a drive around Ngurdoto Crater and the surrounding plains. These regions are home to a variety of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, warthogs, and several species of monkeys, such as the black-and-white colobus monkey.
A park ranger will join you on your walking safari in Arusha National Park. See buffalo, warthogs, colobus monkeys, giraffes, and other wildlife during the walk. The stunning Tululusia Waterfalls, a peaceful spot for rest and photos, mark the end of the trail winding through the forest to the foot of Mount Meru.
As you continue your journey, you will arrive at the beautiful Momella Lakes, a series of alkaline lakes renowned for their vibrant colors and flocks of flamingos. In the surroundings of the lakes, you may also encounter wildlife, such as giraffes and other animals, making this area an excellent spot for observation and photography. Here, you will take a break to enjoy a leisurely lunch, surrounded by the tranquil scenery, with Mount Meru as your backdrop.
After enjoying a delicious lunch at Momella Lakes and taking a final moment to appreciate the stunning views of the park, it's time to begin your journey back. As you drive leisurely through the park, be sure to keep an eye out for any last-minute wildlife sightings. Then, head back to Arusha, which will take about 30 minutes, or to Moshi, which will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. You’ll arrive in the evening, full of unforgettable memories!
