Meru Mountain: The Perfect Destination for Adventurers

Meru Mountain, also known as Mount Meru, is located in northern Tanzania, within Arusha National Park. It's the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) tall. Meru is a dormant stratovolcano, which means it's built up of layers of hardened lava and ash.

Climbing Meru Mountain is a thrilling experience that offers a variety of landscapes and terrains. The mountain is surrounded by lush forests, where you can spot wildlife such as elephants, buffalos, and colobus monkeys. As you ascend, the landscape changes to heath and moorland, with stunning views of the surrounding savannah and Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance. The final ascent to the summit is a steep and challenging climb, but the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort.

Our Meru Mountain tour packages are designed to suit all levels of climbers, from beginners to experienced hikers. We offer both private and group tours, depending on your preferences. Our expert guides will accompany you on the climb and ensure your safety and comfort throughout the journey. We also provide all necessary equipment, including sleeping bags and food. At each stop along the way, you'll be able to rest in comfortable huts, which offer a more secure and sheltered sleeping option than tents.

Mount Meru - 6 Days Tour Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi for an overnight stay. You will meet your guide for a briefing on the climb and check your gear.

Early in the morning you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. At this time, the porters will organize and pack the belongings for the hike while you and your guide register with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA). The first day of hiking is similar to a walking safari; you should expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and potentially elephants near the trail. Due to the high possibility of spotting wildlife, an armed ranger, hired through the National Park, is required to hike with our team for the duration of the hike. As you continue hiking, you will pass the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the base of Mt. Meru. Upon arriving to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m), your chef will prepare a hot dinner and warm water for you.

After breakfast, hike from Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570m). The hike takes around 4-5 hours and passes through heather and moorland zones, where you can enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains. After lunch at Saddle Hut, hike to the base of Rhino Point (3,800m) to acclimatize. Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.

Start early in the morning to reach the summit of Mount Meru (4,562m) in time for sunrise. The hike to the summit takes around 4-5 hours and involves steep and rocky terrain, as well as a scramble up the final stretch to the summit. From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Arusha National Park, and the surrounding landscape. After taking photos and enjoying the views, descend back to Saddle Hut for lunch before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut. The descent takes around 5-6 hours. Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

After breakfast, hike from Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate, where you will meet your driver for a transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. The hike takes around 2-3 hours and you will have a chance to spot wildlife such as buffalo, warthogs, and various antelope species along the way. In the afternoon, you can relax at the hotel or explore Moshi town. Dinner and overnight in Moshi.

After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back home. If you would like to extend your trip and explore more of Tanzania, let us know and we can arrange additional activities such as wildlife safaris, Kilimanjaro trekking, cultural tours, or a beach holiday in Zanzibar. Just inform us and we will be happy to prepare a customized itinerary for you.

Comparison of 5-Day and 6-Day Itineraries for Mount Meru Tour

The main difference between these two itineraries is that the 6-day itinerary includes an additional day of descent from Meru Peak to Miriakamba Huts, whereas the 5-day itinerary completes the descent from Meru Peak to Momella Gate on the same day as the summit climb. In the 5-day itinerary, after summiting Meru Peak, the group will rest briefly at Saddle Hut before descending all the way down to Momella Gate. This can be a very strenuous descent, as it involves a steep descent of over 2000 meters in a single day. If you are confident in your physical ability and acclimatization, the 5-day itinerary may be a good option for you. In the 6-day itinerary, the group will summit Meru Peak on day 4 and then descend to Miriakamba Huts for a hot lunch, dinner, and overnight stay. This allows for a more gradual descent and an additional day of rest before continuing the descent to Momella Gate on day 5. This option may be more suitable for those who prefer a more relaxed pace and extra time for acclimatization. Regardless of which itinerary you choose, both offer stunning views and an incredible adventure. I hope this helps you make an informed decision on which itinerary to choose for your Mount Meru tour!
