The picturesque village of Materuni, located at the base of Kilimanjaro National Park, is well-known for its waterfalls, vibrant coffee culture, and customary "Chagga" hospitality. One of the greatest ways to experience village life close to Moshi, Tanzania, is to visit Materuni.
Your tour begins with a guided walk through the beautiful landscape, where you will discover how local fruits such as avocados, mangoes, lemons, and bananas are grown. Along the way, you will also learn about the village's history, traditions, economy, and farming practices before arriving at Materuni Falls.
The experience continues with a visit to a family-run coffee farm. Here, you will participate in the coffee making process, from harvesting and roasting the beans to making your own cup, all accompanied by Chagga songs and dances. To round off the day, enjoy a delicious Chagga home cooked lunch, a true taste of local traditions.
Your guide/driver will pick you up from your hotel in Moshi for a 45-minute drive to Materuni Village, located at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. After a short registration at the village office, your adventure will be ready to start.
After a short registration at the village office, your adventure begins with a 45-minute hike led by a friendly local guide. The trail winds through lush greenery, banana farms, and coffee plantations, that offering a real taste of village life. On clear days, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro towering in the distance. As you walk, your guide will share fascinating stories about the Chagga people, their traditions, and the land they call home, this destination will make your trip as memorable as the waterfall itself.
You will visit a coffee farm run by a local family and during this wonderful time you will learn about the entire coffee making process, from bean to cup. You will join the locals in roasting, grinding and brewing your own cup of fresh coffee, accompanied by the exciting songs and traditional Chagga dances.
After experiencing the art of traditional coffee making, it will be time to relax and enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal prepared by the village hosts. You will be served authentic Chagga dishes such as banana stew, pilau, rice and beans, and seasonal fresh vegetables - simple and full of flavor. It will be more than just a meal but an opportunity to experience true Chaga hospitality.
After lunch and coffee, your guide/driver will take you back to your hotel in Moshi, arriving at the hotel mid-afternoon.
